How to Distinguish Between Different Ayurvedic Body Types

How to Distinguish Between Different Ayurvedic Body Types

According to Ayurvedic medicine, each individual has a unique body type representing a combination of physical and psychological characteristics. Ayurvedic medicine recognizes three main body types or doshas: Vata dosha, Pitta dosha and Kapha dosha. Identifying your Ayurvedic body type or dominant dosha is the first step towards reaping the benefits of Ayurvedic medicine.

1

Examine your body's build. A light or thin body is characteristic of the Vata body type. Pitta body types tend to have a medium build, while Kapha body types tend to have large and solid frames.

2

Analyze your overall mood. Excitability is common to the Vata body type. Pitta people are easily angered and suffer more readily from stress. Kapha body types are relaxed and easy going.

3

Look at your skin. Dry skin is common to the Vata body type. People with fair, ruddy and freckled complexions tend to be Pittas. Kapha people tend to have thick and pale skin that is often oily.

4

Think about how your digestive system functions. Vata people often complain of constipation and gas. Pitta people complain of ulcers, heartburn and fiery digestion. Kaphas often have slow digestive systems causing them to feel heavy after meals.

5

Consider how the weather affects you. Vata people tend to dislike cold weather. Pitta people are bothered by the heat and sun. Kapha people don't like damp and cold weather.

6

Evaluate your hunger. Vata body types tend towards irregular hunger. Pitta body types have a strong, sharp appetite. Kaphas are generally prone to mild hunger.

7

Analyze your intellectual style. Vata people have sharp memories which quickly absorb information, but don't retain it over a long period. Pitta people have good general memories and are excellent speakers, who often voice strong opinions. Kaphas learn more slowly than the other doshas; however, they retain information for a long time.

Tips & Warnings

Most people will identify with two body types; however, some people identify with just one body type. It is very rare for a person to identify with all three body types equally.
